Geek, Nerd, or Intellectual Bad Ass?

STOOPID ZOMBIEZ BAD ASSIn the generation where it’s cool to be a geek and nerds seem to rule the world, where do you really fall on the scale of dorkiness?

Just because you’re attending Comic-Con or love to hit up the latest Marvel action flick while wearing your favorite vintage superhero t-shirt, does that make you a geek or a nerd?

By imposing this question, I am not trying to call out anyone who might be posing as a nerd because it’s hip. Instead, I am just trying to get you to think about who you are, what you’re passionate about, and hopefully by the end of this post, send you on a journey to up your geek-cred and share with me a little something about you.

First, let me give you my definition of these loosely thrown around terms or identifiers.

First off, geek’s are those beings that find themselves overly obsessed with something to the point that outsiders will either admire their in depth commitment to their chosen topic or shun them for being “weird”. Nerd’s on the other hand are beings who are overly intellectual and because of this heightened intelligence are sometimes made to feel socially impaired.

Finally, there are dorks. Dorks are like the ADHD of the geek and nerd world. They can be obsessive and intellectual, but find themselves so overly out there without a care that they are usually too much for most people to handle for long periods of time.

With all that said, do you see yourself fitting into one particular class or do you see yourself kind of taking up real estate in more than one classification?

If so, that’s cool.

Honestly, I find that in reality anyone even considering which category they fit in probably has a little bit of each of these character traits in their personalities.

I know I do.

I find myself geeking out all the time when a new trailer for a long anticipated movie is leaked or when I find some obscure character’s figure or item sitting on the shelf at the local Hastings or comic shop.

As far as my nerdy side, I have always seemed to thrive on learning something new. I wanted to be the first one done with my math pages, I wanted to be able to recreate my favorite cartoon characters in my doodles, and if a topic came up that I didn’t know much about, you’d surely find me heading off to the library or wherever I needed to go to become enlightened. I also know that the nerd in me can cause me to go a night without sleeping when I find a series that I somehow missed when it originally aired – hello Firefly, Battlestar, and Dr. Who – or were published – Game a Thrones, Hunger Games – I instantly and instinctively like a horse wearing blinder must know every detail of those stories or that topic before my nerd-cred is called into question.

As far as my own dorkiness, I find it slipping out all the time, especially when I’ve come up with a new comic strip, begun writing a new sci-fi story, or when a topic that I’ve either geeked or nerded out about comes up and I’m able to share my knowledge. Usually I can keep the conversation informative, but on occasion I do lose people when I run off into lala-land on a tangent.

In the end, I just want to have this first conversation we’re having to maybe help you to look at what it is about life that you find worthy of your attention, obsession, and overall awesomeness.

Are you a geek, nerd, dork, or just an intellectual bad ass?

If so, what do you geek out about? In what topics are you the biggest nerd? Tell me about a time when you dorked-out or found yourself displaying your intellectual bad assness…

Please Like/Favorite/Share/Etc…the more the merrier!
